The Informatics Department at the School of Applied Mathematics and Management is major in training experts in the area of Informatics.

Key Directions:

  • development of methods and algorithms of image processing and pattern recognition for technical vision systems, robotic complexes, control systems and information transmission systems;
  • development of methods and algorithms of information processing, databases, knowledge bases and expert systems;
  • development of parallel and distributed computing methods.

Current information technologies require experts capable of solving a wide range of problems for various information systems with deep knowledge in the areas of information technology and mathematics in particular. A wide range of up-to-date subjects referring to information technologies is offered by the Department: Databases and Information Systems, Internet Technologies and Web-Development Technologies, Modern Techniques of Distributed Data Processing, System Programming, Operating Systems, API Basics, Programming Technology, Specialized Database Management Systems, Database Management Systems, Multimedia Technology, Special Programming Languages.

The students specializing in Informatics study information technologies as well as various courses in mathematics: Mathematical Analysis, Probability Theory, Differential Equations, Optimization Methods, and Decision-Making Theory.

There are a number of courses intended to extend students’ knowledge in the area of information technologies and their applications: Algorithm Theory, Mathematical Support and Dataware of Systems for Complex Signal Processing, Pattern Recognition Theory, Dataware for Investment Activity, Bank Marketing Dataware.

Mathematics and information technologies combined enable to train experts for software and information system development from the design stage and mathematical modeling up to introducing a complete system.

The graduates have the necessary knowledge to solve the following problems: to design information systems, to cope with mathematical modeling, to design and set up databases, to develop software, to put software into operation. The graduates have the opportunity to work in state institutions and private companies both in Ukraine and abroad.

Science and International Cooperation
  • The area of interest of the Department is in the development of mathematical models for complex information processing, such as images in computer vision systems, databases and knowledge bases. A new direction in pattern recognition based on normalization and group theory has been developed.

    Normalization consists in finding the parameters of geometric transformations for an image with the view of compensating them. The compensation can be achieved by means of changing the three-dimensional position of the input image or by means of algorithms, i.e. using reverse transformation related to the input image. The solution of normalization problems plays the key role in pattern recognition and management. Excellent results which are fundamental for science have been achieved by the staff in this field.

    The Theory of Normalization through the moments methods, invariant straight lines, the intersection method developed by the scientists of the Department has been applied in various systems. Currently, the most developed methods are connected with the uniform and consistent image normalization.

    Combined normalization methods for observing real-time moving objects are being developed by the staff members. To solve the problem it is necessary to have effective algorithms of segmentation (e.g. contour extraction), normalization, recognition, as well as hardware. The developed algorithms can be found in diverse systems of civil and military use.

    The field of their application becomes wider taking into account their growing opportunities. Currently, the staff members are engaged in practical application of their scientific achievements: application of computer vision systems for the customs (introscopy), aircraft landing, conveyor lines, forest fire prevention, in intelligent television sets. Research is carried out to raise the efficiency of Distance Learning by means of the Internet, to develop e-textbooks, to introduce new software technologies for knowledge bases and expert systems.

    The staff members of the Department are actively cooperating with universities and companies abroad: LOWE Company (Germany), Hannover University, Alain University, Dresden University (Germany), Klagenfurt University (Austria), Linnaeus University (Sweden). A great number of students specializing in Informatics get double diploma – one from KhNURE and another from a foreign partner University

    In recent years the staff members have published over 470 articles, 7 monographs, 12 textbooks. They have to their credit 42 inventions and patents most of which have been introduced into production
