  • With the help of video communication technology students of the department have on opportunity to participate in international academic projects of the laboratory “Video communication technologies and systems” as well as take part in international contests and conferences
  • The teachers of the department carry out active work on researches in the field of standards of European higher education which allow to introduce new methods of training, establish contacts for new international exchanges.
  • A joint project of training masters of levels 1 and 2 with specialization in “Radio Engineering” KhNURE (Ukraine) – Electrical Engineering with specialization in Signal Processing and Wave Propagation, Linnaeus University, Faculty of Science and Engineering, School of Computer Science, Physics and Mathematics (Sweden) is undertaken by the department. Students are trained in KhNURE during their first year and spend the second year of studies in Sweden, write a Master`s thesis and get a Master`s degree of European standards.
  • The department pays much attention to the organization of modern teaching work and provision of high-level education. Many graduates of the department work abroad: in the USA, Denmark, Holland, Germany. More than a dozen of our radio engineers work for the firm “Epcos” (Germany) who by their work have confirmed high quality of engineer training at the DREF. Students take post-graduate courses in foreign universities.
  • Scientific work with students is well organized. Among the achievements are victories in seminars, contests of young scientists, grants. The highest achievement is the third place in the world Microsoft company competition.
  • The department`s considerable achievement is publishing of textbooks in Ukrainian: the 4-volume edition of “Signals and processes in radio engineering”, the 2-volume edition “Electrodynamics and radio wave propagation”, “Organization of confidential record keeping” and “Circuit theory fundamentals, signals and processes in systems of technical information security. Part I”.
Science and international cooperation
  • The scientific directions of the department are:
    • high technologies in the field of radio engineering, nanopower engineering and technical information security: information systems with radio access and information security systems
    • investigations of radiometric processes in the Earth`s atmosphere
    • antennas with signal processing including nonlinear effects and wireless transmission of energy
    • systems of technical information security
    • special studies on technical information security
  • The research and training center “Radiotechnika” functions at the department which was founded by B.L. Kashcheev and which, according to the rector`s order, consists of the research laboratories of information measuring systems, antenna theory and equipment, satellite network technologies of high-precision position finding; multipurpose geographic complex for researching the atmosphere and meteor substance inflow (the Balakliivskiy ground).
  • The research work of the center is done in the following directions:
    • high-precision synchronization of space separated time and frequency standards
    • formation of cryptographic keys with use of random characteristics of a meteor radio channel
    • use of external sources of radio radiation to calculate the inflow of meteor substance
    • digitalization of the previously obtained results of observing meteor radio reflections
    • development of present-day digital information transmission systems (DITS)
    • development of theory and equipment of reconfigurable and self-structured antennas
    • high-precision determination of space-time characteristics of stationary and moving objects
  • The Balakliivskiy ground is the scientific base of the department that has been formed for 50 years. It has some unique radio measuring complexes. It is their combination that is a real national achievement registered under the name “Multipurpose geophysical complex for researching the atmosphere and inflow of meteor substance”. The complex includes the radiolocation system MARS (meteor automated radiolocation system), the most sensible system in the world that helped to create a computer database of parameters of radio meteor streams and that has no match in the world as to the amount of the material collected.
  • In addition, the complex includes the radar “VETA” for obtaining fundamental data of wave processes in the upper atmosphere. The complexes “MARS” and “VETA” consume too much energy. Therefore, the scientists of the center have developed a new methodology of research with the help of foreign transmitters. One of the developments is a measuring station to research meteor activity by the method of diversity location by TV signals. At present this system operates in world network and supplies our data for enriching world knowledge of meteor location. The developers are professor A.M. Oleynikov and assistant professor Yu.V. Lykov.
  • Setting up the GPS station “SUPE” in KhNURE is the considerable achievement of the center. The station was certified. The certificate was signed by Y.S. Iatskiv, member of the NASU.
  • The staff of the laboratory – O.O. Zhalilo, D.O. Shelkovenko, O.O. Zhelanov – participated in the creation of a permanently functioning network of GPS stations in Ukraine. What is most interesting is the distance between base stations is about 150 km, while in Europe it is about 50 km. This achievement is due to the introduction of the technology of measurement information processing proposed by O.O. Zhalilo. The station was registered by the Central Astronomical Observatory of the NASU as an international geodynamic station (DOMES 155 04 M001) in the National Geographic Institute of France as well as a provider of measurement information in real time in the Federal Agency of Mapping and Geodesy of Germany.
  • The antenna laboratory, that is developing the theory of reconfigurable and self-structured antennas, has definite achievements. Its head is Prof. Anatoliy I. Luchaninov. Researches on wireless energy transmission by a microwave beam were done in the laboratory for the first time in Ukraine.
  • The laboratory of information and measuring systems headed by Prof. Yuriy O. Koval is traditionally engaged in investigating problems of high-precision time and frequency synchronization. Researches are done in two directions: improving the radio meteor synchronization method and developing a method that is an alternative of the one based on the use of satellite radio navigation systems (SRNS). The disadvantage of the method is dependence on the operation of foreign SRNSs. The alternative method is a passive one that uses signals of terrestrial and satellite TV in points being synchronized. The development of the alternative method was patented.
  • Development of digital information transmission systems (DITS) is a new achievement in the work of the center. The DITS design Guadro (developed by O.I. Tsopa) is a multichannel digital system, the first one in Ukraine providing information transmission over a distance of up to 5 km at a speed of 20 Mbits per second. It was adopted in the Call Processing Center “02” of Kharkiv City Main Interior Department.
  • At present the project “Mobilniy Universytet” (“Mobile University”) is being developed in KhNURE, the aim of which is realizing a mobile information network in the interests of education and science. An experimental segment of the network has been developed and it is used at some university forums. Testing the reading room is being finished, so soon students will be able to use wireless access to information resources.
  • The department has some interesting developments in the field of wireless technologies – a mobile measurement laboratory for measuring attenuations while waves are being propagated in a city during the operation of the WiMAX system (O.O. Strelnitskiy).
  • One of the directions of work is developing information relay stations on small radio-activated carriers that are developed with the aim of their adoption into radio technical systems of forecasting emergency situations (relay station on a dirigible balloon).
  • The department`s plan of research work for 2012 envisages defence of 6 doctoral dissertations and publishing of 8 monographs.
  • The DREF is the recognized leader of radiolocation meteor research in the Earth`s atmosphere, meteor communication, studies of the Earth`s atmosphere dynamics, development of time and frequency synchronization systems as well as investigation of antennas with nonlinear elements and wireless energy transmission by a microwave beam.
