The following fundamental mathematical disciplines are taught (mathematical analysis, functional analysis, algebra and geometry, differential equations, the equations of mathematical physics, theory of probability and mathematical statistics, discrete mathematics), students study various computer disciplines (software computing systems, software engineering, database management systems, computer graphics and computational geometry, computer networks, WEB technology, SCADA systems, geographic information systems and technology), as well as professionally-oriented disciplines (stochastic processes, numerical methods, optimization methods, optimal stochastic control, methods of operations research, actuarial mathematics, financial mathematics, interval mathematics, time series analysis, simulation modeling, catastrophe theory, chaos theory, system analysis, theory of artificial intelligence, project management, decision and support theory, risk assessment and management, principles of design and architecture of modern systems, the methodology of computing implementation of complex mathematical models and methods, CASE tool design and functionality of information systems).

Scientific schools for young scientists have been organized and the Department provides the following courses: “Fractals and multifractals” (Associate Professor L. Kirichenko), “Stochastic models and methods of operational control of power systems” (Professor A. Tevyashev), “Mathematical modeling and numerical analysis of transient modes of transport and distribution of the target products’’ ( Professor I. Gusarov), “System analysis and modeling of the problems of socio-economic systems” (Assistant Prof. O. Sinelnikova), “Development of modern Microsoft-based information systems. NET Framework 4.0“ (Researcher Ye. Vykhodtsev). The Department organizes preparation for academic competitions held among students (Associate Prof. M.V.Sidorov).

The contract was concluded with the Institute of Mathematics and System Engineering (Vaxjo, Sweden) about student exchange programme allowing to get master and bachelor diplomas at the University of Vaxjo.

Science and international cooperation
  • Scientific schools of the Department: ”Stochastic models and methods for monitoring and control in power systems” (Prof. A. Tevyashev), “Methods for Stabilization and Focus of distributions of nonhomogeneous Markov systems” (Prof. V. Dikarev).

Scientific research directions: stochastic models and methods of energy in power systems, mathematical modeling and optimization of non-stationary non-isothermal modes of transportation and distribution of natural gas in the gas transportation system, mathematical modeling and system analysis of electrical power systems, interval analysis and its applications, geographic information systems and technologies in energy systems, mathematical modeling and numerical analysis of computed tomography images, system analysis and theory of optimal decisions, projection methods for solving boundary value problems and integral equations, stochastic analysis in economics and engineering, a model of catastrophes in ergatic systems.

Priorities for international activity of the Department are cooperation with European universities. The Department signed the contract with the University of Vaxjo (Sweden) on scientific and technical cooperation.

The Applied Mathematics Department and Dresden University of Technology have participated in the competition for a grant for the preparation of the manuscript joint textbook “Optimization Methods.”
